Database Application Support Specialist

We are looking for a specialist database programmer to join the InterPro team at the European Bioinformatics Instititute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The database programmer will work in a cross-project role, providing database-related expertise to the application development teams and to function as liaison between the application developers and the DBAs. Tasks will include database design for new projects, plus database application development, performance tuning and trouble-shooting for existing projects. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the development of good practice on database applications and to provide seminar-based training to the development teams.

The EBI is Europe’s leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry. Many of our services depend upon large relational databases; these are maintained by a team of DBAs working closely with domain-focused application developers. business grants

Applicants must have a proven record in software development, experience in programming in SQL and excellent knowledge/background in at least one relational database technology; Oracle and/or MySQL. Experience in database performance tuning, knowledge of large databases and proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java or Perl is essential. At least 2 years of professional experience is required.

Candidates must have excellent communication skills and work well in a team environment.
